I’m sure we all have our stories , where we were , what we were doing in the day . September 11th , is that day for me . Previous generations would say Kennedy assassination , Pearl Harbor etc. the moment that seems like yesterday.
My story thankfully doesn’t include people I knew in the tower . I just happened to be living in the area and just recently moved back to New Jersey from Ohio within a year or 2 of this event .
For me , it was a time I had 3 Russian staying with me on a work and travel J-1 visa And also a group of Bulgarians and Lithuanians who were staying with a friend . At my work at the time we would have groups of exchange students who would work for us and we would give them a place to stay .
On this particular morning we had a plan , the Russians needed to go to NYC , the rest of us would take my car and another and head down to Washington DC. So at about 8- 8:30 that morning I dropped the girls off at the train station and went to meet with the others to head south . Listening to CD ‘s in the car someone got a message on a mobile phone of the day after the 1st plane hit , we turned on the radio and heard the 2nd plane as well as the pentagon attack . So needless to say , we turned around as we knew DC would be locked down . New York as well was locked down , couldn’t get into city if you tried . After all was over , the Russians were trapped in the city and with all the commotion it was 3-4 days when I would finally would hear from them to know that they were ok .
Since the 10th anniversary of this tragedy I try to get to the city on that day . Yesterday was no exception, I visit the memorial pool during the day and as the evening comes in I try to find a spot to see the tribute lights .
