Well , today I’m in a mood . Not bad , just a bit confused . Last year I think I talked about this here in WordPress , but , I’ll do it again because it came up in conversation with a fellow photographer.

Now , I’m not claiming to be a great or good photographer, but , I work at getting better almost every day. But , websites / apps such as Instagram and FB do nothing to promote photographers . Unless you pay for followers or likes . Now there are other sites , EyeEm , FOAP , 20twenty etc, where you can post photos and have the potential of selling them or you can pay Instagram and FB to get more likes .

So , using the same hashtags as someone else should yield the same results if the person your comparing to has the same amount of followers ? Not so fast , you have to think at what time you post and algorithms . I will not try to explain algorithms because I have no idea . But, on top of that I have heard people say that when they use hashtags , their photos don’t show up under that tag . I do not know that to be true or not , but there are hashtags that I use that seem to be so good for others and nothing for me .

In the end , if you’ve read this far you’ve learned nothing , but , as a photographer it’s a bit frustrating that there are road blocks to showing your work or promoting yourself. The bottom line, I do not know how to play the game or just refuse to pay for it .

But here are a few examples of what my frustration is .

The first example is a male dancer I shot in Rome , Italy vs. a male dancer selfie .

Now keep in mind that we both have about the same amount of followers between 1650-1750

His photo . 1400 likes with 1700 followers . The photo been up about 4hrs

My photo has been posted for 2 weeks and 74 likes for 1650 followers .

My next example is a ballerina who has a little less followers then me , compared to a female dancer I shot.

Her photo 1100 likes

My photo 121 likes .

And my last example is comparing a photo I posted in Instagram as well as 500px .

Now keep in mind , I have about 1650 followers in Instagram and 120 followers in 500px : the results 88 likes in Instagram, 376 in 500px

The results Instagram you could do just as well or better posting a photo of a garbage can with your phone compared to being in the safari in Africa shooting wildlife with a $5,000-10,000 camera . If your interested in photography, visit apps such as 500px / Flickr where you find the real photographers.

And to answer the question , why do you post in Instagram Steve , if you feel this way . Well truth is , because I choose to do photoshoots with dancers and to find them you need to show them your work and most people I want to photograph are on Instagram . If I was looking for photographer then I go to the other sites .

  1. Hiya, Steve. I totally understood why you felt you had to post this. There are companies that you can pay to tell you how the algorithms work. Some users on Instagram, for example, don’t follow others with similar content because they’ll automatically promote those feeds and send them followers. It is bothersome, but these companies sell advertising and only users who help their bottom line are prioritized.
